Emotionally nourished men don’t order their subordinates to skin a man with a snail fork (even if he deserved it) but Edward did. There is a reason Blackbeard became a legendary pirate captain and stability was not one of them.
As captain he is a skilled, confident sailor. He’s always on his toes, always wanting more. Blackbeard doesn’t feel fear and he doesn’t really ask – he simply does. He is an enigmatic powerhouse and whatever he wants, he gets. Healthy communication and emotions are not concepts he practices on board his ship, but maiming is one hell of an alternative, and Blackbeard loves a good maiming.
He is the poster child for unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Through Stede, a maniac in his own right, we get to know Edward – a deeply emotional, fragile man that never got over his insecurities of not being enough. He grew up being told that he wasn’t the sort to have beautiful things. Stede, a wayward aristocrat, treats him as an equal; he shares the finery that he’s brought with him on the Revenge in exchange of learning about pirating from Ed. They bond and Ed finds himself someone he can genuinely call his friend.
Does he feel guilt for his actions while acting as Blackbeard? Yes. Does he slip into the role when he is emotionally vulnerable? Yes. But hey, he’s highly charismatic so he’s got that going for him.

BACKGROUND
Ed grew up wondering why he didn't deserve fine things. His mother worked as help for an affluent family and didn't shy away in telling him that they simply weren't "those people". His father was an abusive prick that showed neither wife nor son kindness. He was still a child when Edward killed his father after he was particularly cruel. He took his trauma to the seas as a sailor on Hornigold's ship.
Under the strict and questionable tutelage of his Captain, Edward learned what it took to be an excellent sailor and gained the admiration and loyalty of his eventual first mate Izzy Hands. Together they ran a tight ship. While there are hints that he is illiterate, Edward is intelligent and thrived on his knowhow, terrorizing whatever crossed his path. He was a pirate for many years before he came across Stede "Your Captain can suck eggs in Hell" Bonnet. Impressed by the absolute nerve this newbie had, he decided to drag his first mate kicking and screaming to have a bit of fuckery.
